How Long Does a Shipment Take from China?
Updated 2026-05-26
Answer: A shipment from China can take a few days by express, about one to two weeks by air freight when documents are clean, and several weeks by ocean depending on port pair, sailing schedule, customs, trucking, and final receiving.
Mode is the biggest driver
Express is fastest for small parcels. Air freight is useful for urgent cartons and launch inventory. Ocean LCL and FCL are slower but usually better for planned replenishment and heavier orders.
A realistic timeline includes more than transit
Do not count only flight time or vessel time. Add factory pickup, export handling, cut-off, departure wait, customs clearance, destination handling, trucking, delivery appointment, and receiving buffer.
Why China shipments get delayed
Common delays include late cargo readiness, missing commercial invoices, incorrect product descriptions, customs inspection, port congestion, peak season capacity, weather, carrier rollovers, and Amazon appointment constraints.
How to plan for FBA
For Amazon inventory, plan backward from the date stock must be available for sale, not the date the shipment reaches the port. Amazon receiving can add extra time after delivery.
Best operating habit
Use a shipment calendar with ready date, cargo hand-off date, estimated departure, estimated arrival, customs window, delivery appointment, and expected receiving date. Update it whenever the forwarder confirms a milestone.
What still needs human review
- Transit times are estimates and can change due to customs, carrier, port, and Amazon conditions.
- Hazmat, batteries, oversized goods, and restricted products need extra planning time.
