Transit time starts before the vessel departs

The first time loss often happens before port cutoff. Cargo that is not fully packed, labeled, or documented can sit at the factory or origin warehouse, so the practical sea-freight timeline begins when the shipment is truly export-ready rather than when the sailing schedule is chosen.

Sea transit is only one stage in the full lane

Ocean movement covers origin trucking, port handling, loading, sailing, discharge, customs, deconsolidation when needed, and domestic transfer. Sellers who only look at vessel days underestimate how much of the China to US Amazon FBA timeline sits outside the water leg.

LCL and FCL behave differently after arrival

LCL often adds deconsolidation and more handling after arrival, while FCL puts more emphasis on drayage, unloading, and container return timing. Both are sea freight, but their door-to-FBA timelines should not be treated as interchangeable when the inventory date matters.

Plan against sellable date, not port ETA

Amazon sellers should work backward from the date the inventory must be sellable, then include buffer for customs inspection, appointment scheduling, unloading, and Amazon receiving. A shipment that arrives at port on time can still miss the real replenishment target if those downstream steps were ignored.

Use split-mode planning when the sea timeline is too long

If the full order does not need air but part of the inventory is time-sensitive, split the shipment. Sea freight can carry the bulk volume while a smaller urgent tranche moves faster, which protects margin without forcing the entire order onto a premium mode.

What still needs human review

Carrier schedules, port congestion, customs exams, and Amazon receiving conditions can all change the actual timeline.
Dangerous goods, batteries, and restricted products often need extra review time before departure.
